And Then There Were None...

"I miss the taste of a sweeter life, I miss the conversations..." These lines from 'Maps', a Maroon 5 pop song, sum up my feelings quite well during this CoVID lockdown. I miss a lot of things which I wouldn't really have cared about, had normalcy continued. Even the absolutely trivial things seem a luxury now. Of late, a few trains have started running, but there was a complete lull in between with only rare parcel trains running twice a week. Yes, you guessed it right; I'm a railfan and the Chennai-Howrah mainline runs about 100m from my home. I am so much into trains that I can identify whether it's an ICF or ICF-CBC or LHB rake even from the faint noise of an approaching train. Well, let's move on to the things I miss. You might be surprised by their trivial nature though! I miss the Mumbai Local... changing from Harbour to Central line at Kurla, dodging people and scanning the local to find the least crowded 'dabba (bogie)', all in les

The DD/MM/YYYY When Everything Went Wrong

Image
Date: 28th February 2020 Time: 0000 hrs Place: G-411, SD Hall of Residence, NITR Tragedy struck at the beginning of the disastrous day itself, at midnight to be exact. My plans of filling the application for the IITR’s SPARK saw a dead-end when I received a message in English and Odia (local language of the SIM) that my data pack was over. I couldn’t recharge my data at this hour because my debit card's OTP came on mom's phone and she would have been fast asleep I grinned when I remembered that I still had LAN. But I knocked off my roomie's bottle while connecting the LAN wire and then all hell broke loose. My roomie, who I had assumed to be in deep sleep then, woke up in a flash when I was picking up his bottle. He scolded me for being up so late and told me not to touch his things before I could even clarify why the bottle was in my hand. As it often happens, LAN leaves you hanging when you need it the most. So I sent a query message in the SD group.

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I think I heard a faint voice calling my name that day; it all actually began with that.  ‘Deb!’ … This time I heard it a li’l more clearly. I don’t have the foggiest idea of where I was then, but the voice was clearly a familiar one.  ‘ Why weren’t you responding, Deb… ’ she trailed off, panting as she ran to me. I steadied myself and braced for impact (if you know what I mean!); after all, she was my crush! Sensing my nervousness instantly, her pace slowed down to a walk, giving me precious time to gather my thoughts. I had decided to ask her two questions: ‘How’s life?’ and ‘Are you free today, in the evening?’, and all this was decided in the additional two seconds that her slowing down had given me.  As always, things never went the way I wanted them to. I mumbled and stammered a feeble ‘ H-H-Hey! ’ trying not to make any eye contact (I am an introvert and eye contact is the last thing I want). Shuffling her bag and tossing her golden hair gently, she looked at me a

India at the World Cups: Favourites for a Reason From 60 overs to 50 and from day matches to day-night ones, cricket world cups have come a long way since they began in 1975. And so has team India. From being underdogs, the team is now one of the favourites and this is quite evident from the players which the Indian team possesses. On this note let us have a tour of India's outings at the world cups, since 1983.  1983: The Unexpected Victory 1983 is the year that will be eternally etched in the memory of millions of Indian cricket fans. The 1983 World Cup win is considered to be one of the greatest achievements in the history of Indian cricket. The Indian team, despite having the likes of Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar were infact not even expected to move beyond the group stage of the highly competitive tournament. After beginning the world cup well, with two consecutive wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies, India were sta
